There are going to be a lot of celebrities walking around campus for Halloween.

Experts are expecting pop culture personalities to have a big influence on Halloween costumes this year. Research from the National Retail Federation points to the highest Halloween turnout since 2003. The NRF also expects more than 40 percent of people to “dress to impress” for the holiday.

“We expect 2010 to be the year of the costume,” said NRF spokeswoman Kathy Grannis in an article from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

MTV’s “The Jersey Shore” is expected to be a major hit for costumes with Nicole “Snooki,” Mike “The Situation” and DJ Pauly D being fan favorites. Lady Gaga will also be a popular look.

The allure of dressing as Lady Gaga for Halloween comes from her reputation for unconventional looks. Her use of wigs and hairstyles, avant-garde outfits and heavy accessories make it easy for students to create their unique Gaga look from their own wardrobe.

Other popular choices include characters from Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” such as the Mad Hatter and Alice, Jake Sully and Neytiri from “Avatar,” Mario and Luigi, Harry Potter and his various friends and enemies, and the “Twilight” cast.

This is an easy year for couples in terms of Halloween costumes — there is the straightforward Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland.  There is Tiger Woods and ex-Elin or a myriad of ex-mistresses.  How about Little Boy Blue from the nursery rhyme with his modern day blue Avatar?  There seems to be a costume for every fantasy.
