Top 5 Christmas Gifts for Teens

October 30, 2010 - 6:26 am 1 Comment

Being a modern teenager going through an awkward stage of life is not easy. Not yet adults, but no longer children, they usually feel misunderstood, isolated, and are frustrated most of the time. Pleasing them seems like an impossibility. Whether it’s what’s for dinner or what to watch on television or curfew times, there is likely going to be resistance from the teen. If you are buying for a young woman or a young man, we have a list of the top 5 Christmas gifts that will leave them happy – at least for a little while.

  • Video Games- Whether it’s a console – the XBox 360 or the Nintendo Wii – or a video game for the PS3, a video game is sure to make most teens happy.
  • Clothes - While girls like new clothes for Christmas, boys do too, especially the ones who like to look their best. An extra special high priced brand name clothing item might be the perfect gift for the teen in your life.
  • Laptop / Netbook - This is a high priced item, but if the teen is your own and you want to help them in school, a laptop or netbook might be the gift they use all year long.
  • New Phone – Most teens love their phone and getting a brand new one with lots of new features will likely make them leap in joy – on the inside anyway.
  • Digital Camera - There are digital cameras in all price ranges these days. Most teens like to take pictures when they’re out with their friends. If you have the money, a low-end DSLR camera would make most teens ecstatic.

Popular Halloween Costumes 2010

October 29, 2010 - 6:34 am 1 Comment

There are going to be a lot of celebrities walking around campus for Halloween.

Experts are expecting pop culture personalities to have a big influence on Halloween costumes this year. Research from the National Retail Federation points to the highest Halloween turnout since 2003. The NRF also expects more than 40 percent of people to “dress to impress” for the holiday.

“We expect 2010 to be the year of the costume,” said NRF spokeswoman Kathy Grannis in an article from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

Gazette.

MTV’s “The Jersey Shore” is expected to be a major hit for costumes with Nicole “Snooki,” Mike “The Situation” and DJ Pauly D being fan favorites. Lady Gaga will also be a popular look.

The allure of dressing as Lady Gaga for Halloween comes from her reputation for unconventional looks. Her use of wigs and hairstyles, avant-garde outfits and heavy accessories make it easy for students to create their unique Gaga look from their own wardrobe.

Other popular choices include characters from Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” such as the Mad Hatter and Alice, Jake Sully and Neytiri from “Avatar,” Mario and Luigi, Harry Potter and his various friends and enemies, and the “Twilight” cast.

2010 Halloween Fantasy Costume Countdown

October 27, 2010 - 7:28 am No Comments

tiger woods maskThis is an easy year for couples in terms of Halloween costumes — there is the straightforward Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland.  There is Tiger Woods and ex-Elin or a myriad of ex-mistresses.  How about Little Boy Blue from the nursery rhyme with his modern day blue Avatar?  There seems to be a costume for every fantasy. And various studies are showing that more adults are dressing up this year than in the past.

This article is a basic wrap up of Halloween articles to inspire those of you who have not yet decided how you wish to unleash your wild side.

Here are some simple quick “word on the street” ideas:

  • Alice in Sexyland — Long blond wig, yellow hair ribbon, a pinafore over a red, sexy, lace bodysuit.
  • Elin without jewels — Long blond wig, sexy gown, and a bag of babbles with a for sale sign and a sad face.
  • The Old Spice guy — a towels and a bottle of Old Spice
  • Green lovers — wrap yourselves in eco-friendly sheets (any of Tinamarie Bernard’s eco-stories will inspire) Eco-Sexuality and the Ecology of Love
  • French butlers and maids — hand out little cards that say, “At your service.”

Top Five Laziest Halloween Costumes

October 26, 2010 - 7:02 am 1 Comment

mummyCome on, who are you kidding? You’ve got less than a week left. Stop pretending you’re going to throw that over-the-top Lady Gaga outfit together. Besides, that’s a lot of expensive meat to be wasting on a costume. Here are ten of the easiest free or nearly free alternatives, perfect for procrastinators and cheapskates alike.

Toilet  Paper  Mummy. A little tape and a few rolls of TP are all you need. That’s just one of several toilet-paper themed costumes, actually.

Backwards Man. A personal favorite that I’ve worn and that I included in last year’s list of ten cheap and easy Halloween costumes:

You simply put on a shirt and a pair of pants backwards, then put a couple of T-shirts or other padding into the pant’s butt, to give yourself some “back.” Presto! You’re done. To impress partygoers and trick-or-treaters with your cleverness, tell everyone you’re “ass-backwards.”

Big Baby. All you need is a pair of adult diapers, perhaps taken from an elderly relative’s bathroom closet. For added effect, pop a pacifier in your mouth and carry around a transparent bottle filled with the beverage of your choice (White Russian?). This costume works best for men who still have (or have recently regained) some baby fat—and who don’t mind wearing next to nothing at a party. Warning: It might be assumed that your costume is not a baby but something along the lines of “weird fetish guy.”

Don Draper. Pretty simple to pull off if you already own a sleek suit and some hair gel (thanks for the idea, BillShrink). Also helps if you have dark, short-cropped hair, along with a chin. Stroll around with Scotch in hand, and a cigarette dangling from your mouth.

Jake Gittes. Add a fedora to the Don Draper getup, and place some white cloth tape over your nose, and you’re golden as Jack Nicholson’s character in ”Chinatown.” Warning: Don’t do the Nicholson impression unless you can really nail it—or unless the party’s been going on for hours and no one will notice how un-Jack-like you sound.

Christmas Tree Costume Ideas

October 25, 2010 - 6:33 am 1 Comment

xmas-kids-boulemovWhether you plan to dress up like a Christmas tree for a play or a party, you don’t have to dive into your wallet or go to expensive stores to create a costume that’s sure to be a big hit. You may even have some of the supplies to make a Christmas tree outfit in your closet.

The Tree Outfit

Wear green pants and a green shirt. Or wear brown pants, which are most likely easier to find. Brown or tan shoes are suggested. These items you could most likely find in your closet. Even jeans would suffice. Next, get big cotton balls that are sold at any local craft store and attach them to your shirt—a shirt you intend to only use as a costume—with a hot-glue gun. For the top of the tree, stencil a star on yellow or gold poster board, cut it out and glue that onto a plastic crown, also found at art supply stores. Another idea is to take a big gold or yellow ribbon, make sure it is wired, and tie a big bow around your head or on a headband.

The Garland Tree

Get the pine-tree garland at a local craft store, or maybe just from your holiday storage bin. Shape this around your torso and arms. The garland has wires which can make the process easier. However, be careful, as the wires are rough and can hurt; it is suggested to wear a long-sleeve turtleneck. Black or green would work. It’s possible to hang real ornaments on this garland if you wrap the garland well enough around yourself. Use the same steps for the top of the tree as listed in the first idea above.

The Paper Tree

Buy a poster board in green, brown and yellow. Cut the green out to the shape of a giant Christmas tree, or just a giant triangle. Next cut a square out of the brown and glue to the bottom of the tree cut-out to create a stump. Then cut out a star in the yellow and glue on top of the tree. Decorate the tree anyway you please—with charms, glitter, color or stickers. Use your creativity. Then hole-punch the sides of the tree and drape yarn or ribbon through and tie it, so the tree looks like a giant necklace charm. Wear it over your neck. Another option is to create two instead of one, and then thread them together so you can be a Christmas tree in the front and the back.

The Place To Fear on Halloween Night

Edinburgh Vaults

Halloween is one of the creepiest times of the year.  The holiday was molded from ancient Celtic practices, religious rituals, and European folk traditions.  Halloween is a time for celebration, candy, and ghostly superstition.  The day has long been thought of a time when the dead come alive and watch over the land.  These spirits will gather at haunted locations and wander the corners of Earth. The energy surrounding ghosts is said to increase tenfold on Halloween day.  The ancient Celtic people would light bonfires and wear consumes to ward off the roaming spirits.  In the history of modern man, certain patches of land have witnessed horrifying events of mass murder and carnage.  These locations are said to house certain disturbing and ritualistic ghosts.  This article will be discussing ten haunted places around the world.  Places that might be stricken with an unexplained ghostly phenomenon this upcoming Halloween.

Edinburgh Vaults

In the late 18th century, the city of Edinburgh was a thriving community.  To help drive expansion, officials in this area of Scotland approved the construction of two bridges, the North Bridge and South Bridge.  The South Bridge is a nineteen arch viaduct, which holds some unusual architectural feats.  Eighteen of the arches were enclosed behind tenement buildings, which were built upon floor layering.  In total there are approximately 120 vaults beneath the surface of the South Bridge, ranging in size from 6.5 feet (2 meters) to 131 feet (40 meters) squared.  The South Bridge officially opened for business on March 1, 1788.  For around 30 years, the Edinburgh vaults were used to house taverns, cobblers and other tradesmen.  Specific sections were used for the storage of illicit material, including dead bodies.  The bodies were examined by doctors and reportedly used in medical experiments.  Unfortunately, construction of the South Bridge was rushed and the surface was never sealed against water damage.  For this reason, the vaults began to flood and the area was abandoned.

By the start of the 19th century, slum dwellers had taken over the vaults and the area became a renowned red light district, with countless brothels and pubs operating within the abandoned complex.  Living conditions in the chambers were appalling.  The rooms were cramped, dark and damp, with no sunlight, poorly circulated air, no running water, and no sanitation.  Serious crimes and acts of violence were a major problem.  The serial murderers Burke and Hare are thought to have chosen victims from this area.  In the middle of the 19th century, the first reports of bizarre visions and ghostly phenomenon were issued.  At that time, city officials made the decision to drop tons of rubble into the Edinburgh Vaults, making them inaccessible.  The landmarks were not rediscovered until the 1980s, when they were excavated by Norrie Rowan and his son.  During the unearthing of the vaults, strange occurrences and loud cries were often reported.

Today, the Edinburgh Vaults house some of the most popular tourist attractions in the area, including many ghost tours.  The most popular venues are the Mercat Tours, Marlin’s Wynd, and a tour known as The Caves.  Specific corridors of the Edinburgh Vaults are said to house spiritual characters.  Mr. Boots is a ghost that has been known to nudge tourists and follow large groups.  He can often be heard using foul language and stomping on the hard stone floor.  A young spirit named Jack can be seen running about the dark rooms, giggling as he passes by unsuspecting people.  One of the most chilling spirits is an ailing pregnant woman that can be heard crying for attention and help. The Edinburgh Vaults are also known to contain odd cold air flows.  Scientific studies and overnight sleepovers have been conducted in the vaults with some unexplained findings.  In 2009, a BBC TV production team recorded a strange voice that appeared to be that of a Catholic priest reciting the Last Rites.  The ghostly voice continued to be heard on the recording for some 20 minutes before abruptly ceasing after what appeared to be the sound of children yelling.

Top 10 Embarrassing Halloween Costumes

October 20, 2010 - 3:42 am 1 Comment

old hooter girls

Okay, I’ll admit some of these costumes caused me to chuckle but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing any of these in public or in private, for that matter. I give full credit to the brave people who could put pride aside and wear any of these embarrassing Halloween costumes for the enjoyment of others on Halloween.

10. Bat Child – All Grown Up

Remember that hilarious old cover of the Weekly World News? Well this creative fellow turned it into a Halloween costume.

9. You Tube Video – with Penis Transplant

Clever idea, but not the best subject matter. Of course he will be knocking over everything and bumping into everyone, but what makes this so embarrassing is the the “Related Videos” to the right: The World’s First Penile Transplant?

8. Maternity Room

Ah, the miracle of birth. Who knew a maternity ward could be portable.

7. Creepy Bert & Ernie

Dressing up as gay Muppets. What else do I need to say? Well, I will add they are creepy too; almost like Joker from Batman rejects. And the rubber ducky isn’t helping.

6. Retired Hooter Girls

I can only pray that those sagging boobs are prosthetics.

5. Elvis with Camel Toe

Of course I’m assuming this is a costume and not the real Elvis. Although I think the real Elvis could someone avoid showing a camel toe. Thank you, thank you, very much!

4. Free Mammogram Test – Feminist Look Away

Wow, I’m surprised the guy doesn’t have two black eyes, and no, not for the reason you think. I wonder if he has a girlfriend or wife. Not after that costume.

3. Sheep Molester

No words.

2. Spider-man – Nice Package

Okay at first glance you think, not bad for an older overweight guy. Then you take a second glance and think, “Dear God, make me blind!” If you don’t see it, move on and let it go.

1. Hot Dog with an Afro?

You tell yourself that as a human race that we have evolved, matured, if you will. And then you see a man dressed as a 6-foot vagina. Or a messed up hot dog with an afro.

7. Clingons:
No true comic con is complete without a couple of trekies dressed up like some Clingons.

cosplay costumes

It is a definite tie between these two hot nerdy chicks dressed up as the sexy comic character Elektra.

This guy looks like he just walked right out of the scenery from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney Land.

1. Star Trek Cyborg:
