Halloween costumes tips

With October almost upon us and Halloween only a few weeks away; parents are soon to be flooding the stores looking for the perfect Halloween costume for their children if they haven’t already.  Although it’s fun to dress children up as their favorite characters, when choosing, it’s important to not only consider the aesthetic appeal, but also child safety.

1. Consider fire safety. When choosing a child’s costume and accessories, specifically look for the words “flame resistant” on them. Also, beware of costumes made from flimsy material or with loose fitting arms, legs, and skirts to avoid a costume accidentally catching fire near a flame.

2. Choose light colors. Although Halloween has a dark and spooky vibe, resist the urge to buy dark colors.  Instead, choose colors that are light and can easily be seen by motorists.

3. Use reflective tape. This makes the child even more visible and therefore safer. Put it anywhere on the child’s costume and/or treat bag that it will fit.  This can be bought in most hardware, bicycle, sporting goods, and mass merchandise stores.

4. Carry a flashlight. This makes it easier for children to see and also to be seen.  Most mass merchandise and party stores stores now carry inexpensive Halloween-themed flashlights designed specifically for this purpose as an incentive to make using a flashlight more fun for kids.

Cobwebs

Cut strings into 4 foot length and tape them to the ceiling.  Make your room dark for this effect.  Just before your guest arrive hold a bowl of water up to the strings to get it wet.  So when your guests arrive, they would walk into the wet, slimy thing where it would brush across their foreheads to scare them.

Scary Body Parts

Use this as a decoration for your dimly lit room for your Halloween Party.  Have several bowls of body parts displayed to horrify your friends.  Cut up a bunch of hotdogs to look like severed fingers. Also cook up some spaghetti noodles and add some red and blue food colorings to it to make it look like veins.  Put some cocktail onions in a bowl for it to look like eyeballs. And you can also fill a red balloon with warm water and spread it with strawberry jam, invite your guests to touch your brain.

Crunching Bones Underfoot

Spread out some dried bread, pretzel and chips under a rug.  When your guests walk across the rug, it will sound like their bones are crunching underfoot.

Sound Effects

It is a great idea to record scary sound effects and play it all throughout your party to create a scary ambiance.  A large sheet of metal can create a great thunder sound.  Pouring uncooked rice over a cookie sheets would make the sound of rain.  Crinkle a handful of cellophane makes a great roaring fire sound.  You can also record the sound of your own scream while your friends make spooky sounds.  Snap carrots in half for the sound of breaking bones.  Flap plastic bags to make a sound of flying bats.  Slowly blow bubbles into a bowl with water for scary bog sound.  Also try to find a squeaky hinge around the house and record it.

Lightning Your Party Area

Try to install a black light inside your room to make your guests white clothes glow blue.  It can also add dramatic effect by making your paper cups glow.  You can also dress as a skeleton to make the most of your black light bulb.

Monster Footprints

Using a magic marker, draw a footprint in a large sponge.  Cut out the footprint and pour washable paint in a 1/8 inch aluminum pan.  Press the sponge in the paint and sponge footsteps up your sidewalk to your front door for trick or treat-ers to follow.  You can also paint footsteps around the side of your dark, spooky house.  To stamp the other set of footprint, all you have to do is to flip your sponge upside down.

Green Pumpkins

Carve green peppers to look like a jack-o-lantern.  You can arrange a whole row of them in your doorstep, in your window or even in your table and have a whole army of scary faces to greet your visitors at your door.

Ghoolies

Crumple up a piece of tissue paper and form it into a ball.  Then, place it into the center of a flat piece of a tissue paper.  Now pick up the corners of the flat tissue and twist it around the ball. Tie a twist tie or a string around the ghosts’ neck.  Using a marker or a felt pen, draw a face.  Then you can hang them up all over the house.  You can also glue on yarn and make a black hat and cape from a colored paper to make a witch.

Wicked Witch

Cut the top of a cardboard milk carton and discard.  Then cover the carton with a black construction paper and tape at the back.  Cut a strip of white paper that is 3 inches wide and tape it around the top over the black paper.  Then draw a scary witch’s face on the white paper using a marker, and glue on some yarn to make it look like her hair.  Make a cone shape witch’s hat with black paper and glue on top.  Then cut out arms and hands from the white paper and cut out the feet from the black paper.  Tape it to the witch.  Now glue a popsicle stick to one of the witch’s hand.  Cut out two small pieces of yellow paper and cut a fringe at the bottom, then glue one on each side of the end of the popsicle stick for the broom.  You can now hand it over to your friends during your Halloween party.

Bobbing Ghosts

Start with a 2 yard long and 1 yard wide piece of cheese cloth.  Place a helium filled white balloon in the middle of the fabric and gather it loosely around the balloon.  Next is draw a scary mask on the cloth using a marker.  You can place the ghosts inside a box and let people open the box so the ghost will float up and scare everyone.  Another option is to place them on a string in front of an open window or a fan and watch them move in the breeze.

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: 2010 Halloween Costume

September 17, 2010 - 5:48 am 4 Comments

Lady GaGa in meat dress

Lady Gaga’s outfit made of meat continues to be the talk of the music world in the wake of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (which also saw the singer stand up against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” wear one of Alexander McQueen’s final designs, reveal her new album title and win eight awards, including Video of the Year). In fact, it has become such a phenomenon that we are absolutely certain that the outfit will become this Halloween season’s biggest meme. With Halloween candy already eerily occupying shelves in drug stores throughout America, we predict the meat dress to have a Halloween presence similar to the way everybody went as the Joker in 2008 (following Heath Ledger’s memorable performance in “The Dark Knight”).

With that in mind, here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your own Lady Gaga meat dress for Halloween! Frighten your friends! Upset your butcher! Freak out the livestock!

1. Choose your cuts wisely. Any fashionista knows, it’s all about making your outfits work for you, baby. Choose cuts that accent your figure. Rocking a six pack? Leave the prime rib out and flaunt it! Got some junk in the trunk? Accentuate that action with some sweet rump roast!

2. Preservatives and marinade. You’ve got a big night ahead of you — a marathon, if you will. And if you’re like us, you need a costume to stretch through several different parties, which is why you’ll need to take care of your meat. Work with basic curing techniques (salt, pickle brine, dehydration) or work your way up to industrial-strength preservation (plastic coating, shellac).

3. Bring the right side. Couples costumes are a mainstay of Halloween parties, but if you’re taking on the meat dress, you need to be sure you bring an appropriate side. Make sure your date goes as a baked potato, a Cesar salad or a medley of peas and carrots.

4. Drink appropriately. Depending on your choice of meat, remember that your drink will vary. If you’re going for a straight Gaga imitation, though, we recommend a nice Merlot.

Let’s Get the Special Halloween Recipes

Halloween Desserts copy

Blood soup

This is an easy recipe. You will need a can of tomato soup and a pack of musksticks. First, cook the soup in a pan over a stove. Then break up the musk sticks and put them into the soup to create…blood soup with delicious fingers!

Dead Fingers

This is a shortbread type cookie that look like fingers. The dough is piped (use a bag without any tip to get a finger sized cylinder) onto the cookie sheet. Then using the dull side of a butter knife make lines suggesting knuckle and wrinkles, and add an almond for the fingernail. I found the unblanched variety look particularly creepy. You can add a bit of red icing (i.e.that translucent yuk that comes in a tube) if you want a bloody finger. I have experimented with this idea and found it better to make an impression with the almond rather then bake them and “glue” the almonds to the finger afterwards with the “blood”. This gives a new twist to the term “finger foods”.

Brain Cookies

You color a icebox type dough a sickening purplish/gray shade and then push the dough through a colander to make extruded spaghetti shapes. Then you loosely pat spoonfuls of the dough into brain shapes (well at least most kids’ notions of how a brain is shaped). I think I experimented with different kitchen tools with this one and ended up using one of those collapsable steamer things to make the spaghetti.

Pumpkin Cake

Bake 2 cakes in Bundt pans. Place the 2 cakes together bottom to bottom. Frost with orange frosting made from food colouring. The pumpkin face is pieces of a Hershey Chocolate Bar cut into triangles, etc for eyes, nose, etc. And finally set a chocolate frosted cupcake at the top as the stem.

Note: This ends up being a whole lot of cake.

Another Eyeball Dish!

Buy a can of lychee fruits and simply stuff the little devils with grapes (try mixing red and green grapes). Serve in a hollowed out gourd. Serve this down with Vampire blood. Any red-coloured drink will do. Simply serve it in small pumpkin-type gourds that have been cleaned out. Use black liquorice for straws, and start suck.
