The Brief Introduction to Crayon Shin-chan

May 31, 2010 - 7:09 am 8 Comments

Crayon Shin-chan

Crayon Shin-chan (クレヨンしんちゃん Kureyon Shin-chan, also known as Shin-chan) is a Japanese manga and anime series written by Yoshito Usui. Crayon Shin-chan follows the adventures of five-year-old Shinnosuke “Shin” Nohara and his parents, neighbors, and friends and is set in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

Crayon Shin-chan

Crayon Shin-chan first appeared in a Japanese weekly magazine called Weekly Manga Action, which is published by Futabasha. The anime Crayon Shin-chan has been on TV Asahi since April 13, 1992, and on several television networks, worldwide. Shin-Chan has 52 episodes. Many of the jokes in the series stem from Shin-chan’s occasionally weird, unnatural and inappropriate use of language, as well as from his inappropriate behavior. Consequently, non-Japanese readers and viewers may find it difficult to understand his jokes. In fact, some of them cannot be translated into other languages. In Japanese, certain set phrases almost always accompany certain actions; many of these phrases have standard responses. A typical gag involves Shin-chan confounding his parents by using the wrong phrase for the occasion; for example, saying “Welcome back!” (“おかえりなさい”) instead of “I’m home!” (“ただいま”) when he comes home. Another difficulty in translation arises from the use of onomatopoeic Japanese words.

Crayon Shin-chan

In scolding Shin-chan and attempting to educate him in proper behaviour his parent or tutor may use such a phrase to indicate the correct action.Often through misinterpreting such a phrase as a different, though similar sounding phrase, or through interpreting it in one sense when another is intended, Shin-chan will embark on a course of action which, while it may be what he thinks is being requested of him, leads to bizarre acts which serve only to vex his parents or tutors even more. This is not restricted to onomatopoeic words, since almost any word can become a source of confusion for Shin-chan, including English loan-words, such as mistaking “cool” for “pool” (“That’s pool!” or “プールだぞ!” for “That’s cool!”).

Crayon Shin-chan
Shin is the main character, a kindergarten-aged boy whose antics are the basis for the series. The website describes Shin as “Sort of a Calvin and Hobbes with a greater fascination for bathroom humor and puns.” Voiced by Laura Bailey.

Seiyu Breakthrough In Japan

May 28, 2010 - 3:41 am 7 Comments

Becoming a seiyu in Japan is just as prominent as becoming a Hollywood actor in the USA.  Seiyu are voice actors who usually make their way to fame through acting in Anime films and videogames, but also act in radio dramas, foreign film dubbing, puppet shows, and television narrations.  Seiyu are professionally trained voice actors, and becoming a successful seiyu is a very competitive task.

Seiyu

The seiyu industry is cutthroat and very difficult to make into.  Seiyu usually go through many years of training, or make their way up to being seiyu from other roles.  There are several different ways to become a seiyu, but even through the most extensive voice acting training, there is no guarantee for a breakthrough.

Seiyu

Many seiyu were trained by a privately funded drama group.  They would specialize in radio drama acting and foreign film dubbing.  Since television became popular, radio acting and announcing have become less desired seiyu jobs.  However, for many it is a good start.

Seiyu

A common way to become a seiyu is also from having acting experience.  It is common that young people who joined a theater company in high school, do acting in university or have attended a specialized school are scouted by people from the anime industry to become a seiyu.  If an aspiring voice actor is serious about becoming a seiyu, then he or she will attend a seiyu training school for several years after graduating from high school.  Attending a seiyu training school is the easiest path to becoming a trained seiyu, but with hundreds of aspiring seiyu enroll in a training school a year, the competition is very high to make it in the professional seiyu world.

Most seiyu begin working in their profession after at least graduating high school.  There have been few seiyu to appear with small anime rolls while still in middle school, but children seiyu are not at all common.  Japanese children are encouraged to study first, and then choose their professional career afterwards.  Children seiyu are also not needed because women most often play the role of a child in a film, videogame, or television show.  Good seiyu can play the role of any gender and any age.  The demand for highly versatile seiyu is another reason why the competition in the seiyu industry is so high.

Becoming a seiyu is not at all easy.  Seiyu must already have extensive training and experience before making their way to the big gigs.  Once a seiyu has made it into the industry, it is just as difficult to stay in.

A good cosplay sword is something that you can make on your own. Here is a simple process to use with regards to getting a sword ready for your cosplay costume.

You should first consider the sword that you are working with. It will help to take a look at how the size of the sword is proportionate to the body of the character that is using it. This should be used as a guide for helping you to figure out how many physical materials will have to be used for your costume.

After you figure out what sword you will be making you can begin. You should look to get a durable type of material ready for your base. A good piece of foam board or cardboard should be used. You can easily cut this material with a sharp knife.

After this is done you should take a look at the coverage materials that will be used for your sword. A good amount of aluminum foil can work as a cover for the fake blade. This is provided that you make sure that the foil is completely flat and does not have any creases in it.

It will help to look into the handle. You should look to get a durable glue or tape material to work between your handle and your fake blade. This comes from how the handle can feature a width or shape that is different from what your blade will be using. One tip to use at this point is to consider getting a large circular area ready between the handle and the blade ends. A hole that will be used on the inside of this area can be used.

You should look into one of two things for your handle cover. Either a ribbon or a piece of foil can be used over the handle. The material should be of the same color as what is used on the sword that you are copying.

After you get the entire sword built up you should look to see that it works with all of its details. A good sword will feature details like marks, etchings and fake gems. These are things that can easily get a sword to look just like what your character is going to be using.

This is a simple procedure that can be used for you to get your cosplay sword set up. This can be used to help with making your costume look great.

Samurai Hats

May 20, 2010 - 3:06 am 1 Comment

A Samurai is a noble member of Japanese military and it is a part of history that has become a popular thing to see for a costume. Most of the cosplayers don these costumes as well and hence it is important to get full information about these people.

Samurais usually wore a hat called the samurai hat or the Jingasa. Jingasa gained popularity in the Edo period 1700- 1860. It was believed that this period was a period of peace and hence did not have additional protection on these hats from arrows and sword. The original samurai hats are said to be crafted in such a way that they can also protect the wearer from attacks. However, during the peace time the Jingasa hats became the symbol of a Samurai aka Japanese warrior.

There are various methods of creating hats through straw and paper as well. Some even use cardboard as a method of preparing samurai hats. The color of original samurai hats is usually an earthy tone, however when using paper or straw hats the color differs. Even the Jingasa hats had a tint of vermillion or even gold and black color as the base. There are even iron Jingasa hats available.

Seiyuu’s are always acknowledged and acclaimed for their contribution in the amine world of Japan. There have been the growth of many seiyuu’s in Japan and many of them have been able to get their name on the top list and have a bunch of fans following them. There have been many female voices which have been admired by the audiences. Some of them include; Koshimizu Ami, Tomatsu Haruka, Kugimiya Rie, Hirano Aya, etc.

Though there are followers of many of them, the best one among the lot, undoubtedly would be Koshimizu Ami. Born on February 15th 1986, she was raised up in Kokubunji, Tokyo Perfecture in Japan and is presently working with Production Baobab (Jun Fukuyama is also associated with the same). She was previously working for Gekidan Wakakusa. While her works there, she was backed by the senior member Mayumi to pursue a hard hitting and acknowledging career of a seiyuu. Initially hesitant but later confident, Koshimizu Ami, started her career by her debut in the TV amine Ahita no Nadja. Her personality is that of a happy go lucky person and she is always admired and liked by the fellow colleagues. She doesn’t hesitate to ask for advice when she cannot understand and relate to particular words because of her weakness in English and kanji.

She has a really tall stature compared to the Japanese women (5 feet 6 inches), and because of her height her school friends often though that she would come up in the career of modeling. However, that thought never materialized but she still works as leading and supporting roles in many of the commercials. Apart from that she has been co-hosting the Comchat Countdown radio series with Takahiro.

She has bagged the award of the best actress in a supporting role for the role of Kallen Stadtfeld in the Jun Fukuyama starrer Code Geass- Lelouch of Rebellion. In the year 2006 she had more than 10 TV amines in which she took part and some of them were for the leading roles as well.

Her career graph has notices a huge upscale ever since she has started as a seiyuu. From DVD’s to commercials to Game amines she has been there and done that all. Cosplay Strategies – The Cosplay Hat

May 18, 2010 - 4:26 am 2 Comments

One of the necessary parts of my cosplay costumes is the hat. There are many costumes that require a hat in order to make the costume complete. So here are a few strategies to help you make sure you find the right cosplay hat for your costume.

The design

You will need to study the design of the hat. The design must coincide with how the entire costume looks. It must be a piece that completes the look of the costume. For instance, you may be dressing as a particular baseball player. This means you have to have the hat. It is just as important is if you were dressing as a sailor because you would need the sailor’s hat. In many cases, the fabric needs to be the same as the rest of your costume so they will go together well.

Construction

Next is the construction of the hat. Some hats may be made of cheap materials such as plastic. This is what makes a hat look as if it is of a poor quality. If you do not want to spend a lot of money, it can help to invest in a hat that doesn’t give off a lot of shine. A shiny hat indicates a cheap hat. The only way that a hat should shine is if the costume itself has a metal look to it. Some of your favorite characters may wear armor, which is when it is okay to wear a shiny hat. However, metal needs to be worn with metal and plastic with plastic. Mixing materials can make for a cheap look.

The fit

The next thing you need to do is make sure the fit is right. Some hats are one size fits all if they are stretchy, but not all of them are. If the hat is fitted, then it is going to be more accurate. Your cosplay hat won’t be falling down into your eyes. Instead, it will stay in place. It doesn’t matter if your hat is a helmet or something elaborate. It has to fit around your head. It is better if everyone can focus on your costume as a whole rather than whether or not your hat fits.

So these are some cosplay strategies that you can use to make sure your cosplay hat is the perfect hat for your costume. Using the above strategies will ensure that your hat is of a high quality, has material that matches the material of your costume, and fits you correctly.

How to Maintain Cosplay Costumes

May 14, 2010 - 6:38 am 3 Comments

Cosplay costumes are unique, complex, and they make a statement. They are also expensive to buy and to make. That is why you want to maintain them to the best of your ability so that you can get the most wear out of them.

But being that cosplay costumes are so complicated in design and can have various types of fabric. You can have as many as three or four different fabrics making up your costume, which can make maintaining the cosplay costume rather complicated.

Washing the fabric

You must pay close attention to the fabric. Different types of fabric have different types of maintenance. For instance, a cosplay costume may consist of silk. If this is the case, you always want to wash it with a mild detergent. However, machine washing can be too rough, so you want to hand wash your costume. This is ideal when your cosplay costume is made of different types of fabric. When the costume consists of both silk and cotton, the cotton will still clean up if washed by hand in a mild detergent.

And believe it or not, other materials such as satin may be present on the costume as well. Being that satin can be made of different types of fibers, you’ll need to be careful. Satin can be made of polyester or of silk. You’ll need to know which your costume is made of because, if you have a costume made of cotton and satin, you may be able to machine wash it if made of polyester satin. If made of a silk satin, you will need to gently wash your cosplay costume by hand.

Some individuals are more comfortable with washing their cosplay costume by hand regardless of what it is made out of. The washing machine can be rather rough on clothing and shorten its life.

Simple maintenance

You don’t always have to wash your cosplay costume. You can simply spot clean it with a wet cloth if there are spots that can be easily removed.

When storing your costume, store it in a garment bag and away from areas that may encounter moisture. You don’t want your costume to become moldy or smell musty. If there is any indication that the area may not be favorable, hang the garment bag on the back of a door or another open area so that it does not obtain strange smells.

If you must, you can have your cosplay costume dry cleaned on a schedule. You can have it cleaned every 3 or 6 months, depending on how often you wear it and if it becomes accidentally soiled during an event.

Maintaining your cosplay costume doesn’t have to be difficult. Maintenance has to do more with careful handling and ensuring that it does not become soiled. Where you store your costume also has a lot to do with how well you care for your costume. When you store it in the right place and clean it accordingly, you can get the most out of your costume.
